SHOWERFACE 1You arrive at the door to an apartment belonging to your old friend Turtleface. You contemplate not going in, but know that you probably should. After all this time, why now does he choose to reach out? You haven 't heard from anyone in your old friend group in a while.
[[Knock at the door->KNOCK]]
[[Turn away->TURN]]
(set: $pink to 0)
(set: $salts to 0)Turtleface opens the door with a big smile on his face, which bares a striking resembalance to a turtle. A extravagant but faded pink scarf is strewn around his neck, which stands in stark contrast to his frat-bro fashion sense.
"My old friend! How many years has it been?"He ushers you in excitedly
"Please head to the bathroom and wash your hands, the filth outside is vunerable only to the strongest of soaps.
(text-colour: red)[HOWEVER, whatever you do, DO NOT look behind the shower curtain.]
I realize that may make you curious, but I ask that you respect my privacy."Turtleface slumps down on the couch in his living room and passes out. He 's always had weird bouts of narcolepsy, but he 's always okay.
He 'll be out for a while.
[[Go into the bathroom->BATHROOM]]
[[Snoop around his house->SNOOP]]You walk into the bathroom and lock the door behind you. The bathroom is tiled on every surface, including the roof and the faucet. The sink sits right next to the door with a nearly finished soap dispenser next to it. Against the wall opposite the door, a yellow shower curtain obscures a bathtub.
You swear you see the shower curtain move ever so slightly, but it must be a trick of the light.
You swear you hear something gurgling and moaning back there, (link:'but its probably just the drain or the pipes ')[it is not just the drain or the pipes].
No matter what you choose, you will learn the truth about what hides behind the shower curtain. And yet, your choice is still vitally imporant.
[[Wash your hands at the sink->WASH HANDS]]
[[Pull back the shower curtain->PULL BACK]]
(set: $purple to 1)You decide to respect Turtleface 's privacy and not look behind the shower curtain. When you turn the faucet to wash your hands, no water comes out. A loud gurgle coming from the bathrub suprises you, and you watch as the shower curtain peels itself back...
(set: $morality to 1)
[[Approach the Bathtub->SHOWERFACE]]The bathtub is filled with a mass of flesh up to its brim, shapeless and almost liquid-like. Flowers poke out of little hair folicles on its skin.
On top of the flesh sits two chunky square televisions, each playing what seems to be a never-ending video of a human eyeball. Its some kind of fusion of flesh and metal, one of Turtlefaces artistic endevors gone amiss. You feel bad for the creature.
A small purple SD card sticks out of one of the televisions, which has been modified to hold up to a dozen more SD cards. The entirety of the creature 's consciousness is likely stored on it. You can gurgling coming from within the tub, its sound dampened by flesh.
(text-colour: purple)["YOU ARE THE ANSWER."]
A nerdy voice squeeks through speakers the televisions. The eyeballs seem to be looking right at you. The spoken text transcribes itself at the bottom of the screens.
[[Reply "I 'm what?"->SHOWERFACE 2]]
[[Reply "What the fuck are you?!?!"->SHOWERFACE 2]]
[[Reply "Your prayers have been answered my friend. I am the messiah!"->SHOWERFACE 2]]Despite Turtleface 's request, your curiosity gets the best of you. If he hadn 't mentioned it, you probably wouldnt have cared.
You choose to pull the shower curtain back quickly like a bandaid, and what it reveals is alarming.
(set: $morality to 2)
[[Take a good look->SHOWERFACE]](text-colour: purple)["MY TECHNOLOGICAL PRAYERS HAVE BEEN ANSWERED.

Against all odds, a tear is pressed out of the digital eye, through the TV screen, and drips onto its fleshy body. A tongue creeps out from the fleshy depths and pets the tear to absorb the moisture.
[[Reach forward and remove the Purple SD card->SHOWERFACE DECISION]]You reach forward to take the purple SD card, but stop when the voice interrupts you once more.
(text-colour: purple)["WHILE I HAVE THE CHANCE,

(set: $humanity to 2)
[[Head into living room->LIVING ROOM]]Back in the living room, Turtleface remains out cold, sprawled out like a streching cat on his red leather sofa. The smell of Turtleface 's apartment suddenly awakens a memory within you, nuerons light up a long neglected path in your brain.
Back in college, you and other friends of Turtleface would take turns getting him his smelling salts when he would fall asleep in the middle of something important.
He always kept them hidden away in his pillow case, and it seems he hasn 't changed all too much from those days.
Physical force won 't be enough to wake him up, but you 'll never understand why he invited you over after all these years unless you wake him up.
At the end of a hall opposite the bathroom door sits a metal door labeled "T-FACE 'S ROOM, NO GIRLS ALLOWED "In the middle of the hallway sits a blue door the texture of yarn with a large ":3 "embroidered on its face with red string. You can try and enter this room too, but I 'm warning you now that its going to be locked and a waste of your click.
[[Head through the metal door->MAIN ROOM]]
[[Try to open the BLUE door->PINK LOCK]]
[[Try to remember more...->MEMORY]]The room behind the door matches its entrance. Pure cast-iron from wall to wall, or is it steel?
The room is dimly lit and generally unpleasant to all your senses.
The space is wide to your sides but shallow to your front. In the far corner to your right you see 2 matresses stacked on top of one another. The bottom matress is particularily tattered. A pillow in a blue case sits on top, the same one from college.
A huge flat screen TV dominates the far wall, in front of it is a dusty black computer keyboard on a pink wooden desk. A fat wire connects the tv and the keyboard.
A pink SD card can be seen sticking out of a slot on the top of the television.
(if: $purple is 1)[It looks nearly identitcal to the purple one you have. In your pocket, the SD card vibrates weakly. You didn 't know they could do that. Neither did I.]
The screen lights up and displays pink text:
(text-colour: fuchsia)["HELLO?"]
An underscore (_) flickers at the bottom of the screen, beckoning you to type a response at the keyboard.
[[Check the pillowcase->PILLOWCASE]]
[[Reply "Hello "by typing it and pressing enter->PINK]]You try to open the blue-yarn door, but it is unmovable despite its vunerable appearance. You 're going to need a key to get inside.
Look, I wasn 't trying to be a dick and fool you when I said that this room wasnt accessible at the moment. Next time, just trust me, alright?
[[With the feeling that you have wasted valuable time that you can never get back, head through the metal door.->MAIN ROOM]]
(set: $special to 1)In Turtlefaces blue pillowcase you find his favorite brand of smelling salts (Sniff-Em 's) in his favorite flavor (Blue-Raspberry Ice) and stuff them in your pocket. This will wake him right up! You can head back into the living room and wake him up.
Before your able to leave, the computer screen goes black for a beat before flashing back to life. After a moment, the same text from before appears on the screen.

DRAFT: [[Eject the Pink SD card->EJECT 2]]You walk back into the living room where Turtleface is fast asleep on the couch.
You pop open his smelling salts and your eyes immediately begin to water. This blue raspberry ice stuff is strong.
The moment you hold it near Turtleface 's nose, his eyes bulge wide open and he swings his body up to sit with impressive posture.
"You remembered my smelling salts!
You are too kind my friend...
Just like I remember.
Come, come.
Im sure you were curious about the technological innovations in my room "Turtleface walks towards his room and gestures for you to follow him.
[[Go into room with metal door with Turtleface->TURTLEFACE ENDINGS]]
You carefully insert the purple SD card into the slot on top of the television, right next to its pink twin.

[[Stare blankly at the screen->LOOP CONT]]
[[Take the purple SD card back->EJECT]]You head back into the hallway and notice the BLUE door now open just a crack.
[[Go into the living room and wake up Turtleface->WAKE UP]]
[[Enter the room behind the BLUE door->CAT ROOM]]
Standing in the room behind the :3 door, you are practically blinded by the tasteless overhead lighting and the off-color yellow walls. A creature sits huddled in the far corner to your left, chained to a pole. It has the face of a cat, but a body that appears entirely metal and mechanical.
You hear a DING to your right and notice a big red button flashing just above the animal 's food bowl. Text on the button reads (text-colour: red)["RESET "]
The metal-bodied cat arises slowly from its rest, walks over to the button, and presses it with its paw.
The flashing stops, and a pipe descending from the cerealing dispenses a small disc of mush into the cat 's bowl, which it gobbles up immediately. Its chain is just long enough to complete its task and eat its food.
The cat returns to its spot and curls back up.
[[Try to take Cat->TAKE]]
[[Try to free Cat ->FREE]]
You detach the chain from the cats collar and give it a sweet pat on the head.
It leaps onto your shoulders and positions itself comfortably there.
It is suprisingly weightless.
You hear a ding and the red button flashes again.
The cat ignores the sound and grooms itself.
Now that the reset cycle is broken, you can head back into Turtleface 's room.

A small purple SD card sticks out of one of the televisions. The entirety of the creatures consciousness is likely stored on it.

In bed that night, you lie and bed and try not to let feelings of confusion and hopelessness consume you.

[[100 YEARS PASS->100 years]]
You spend the rest of your days following the two intellegent AI you met in TURTLEFACE 's apartment. The three of you hitch a ride on an outgoing email, and you spend a lot of time getting to know them.
However, it doesn 't take long for your newfound friends to gain access to the supercomputer that controlls just a few nuclear missles and blindly launch them at a bigger nation.
By the end of the hour, the entire globe is engaged in a fully fledged nuclear war. The two AI urge you to follow them, and you zip through a fiber optic cable to a secure location.
When you arrive, the underground computer only has enough space for two and you are quickly hung out to dry.
Before long, the data that held what was left of you is lost to history.
THE ENDAs you fall asleep, an image of how things could have gone differently forms in your mind.
[[Dream of how things could have gone differently...->OPENING]]
[[Accept your reality as is.->ACCEPTANCE]]You need not dream of things out of your control.
While you may not love you current situation, you accept it as the reality of your life, a fact of life that is unchangeable with willpower alone.
You dream of nothing that night, and the most eventful day of your life comes to a close.
THE ENDEverytime the button flashes, you walk over to press it.
And everytime you press the button, a disc of food is dispensed from the ceiling.
[[Eat your food.->TRUE 2]]Everytime you eat the food, you 're overwhelmed by this warm and pleasant feeling.

This is your life now, you are a cat, used to press a button.
[[Meow?->Meow.]]Meow indeed.
THE ENDYou wait patiently for something interesting to happen, but TURTLEFACE never seems to show up.
When the end of the month aproaches, the electric company doesn 't recieve its usual check, and the power is promptly shut off.
The sudden change causes the computer 's security measures to kick in, and all of its data is burnt, including all that was left of you.
THE ENDAfter 100 years, you feel quite fulfilled with your life and relationships. All is well.
[[1,000 YEARS PASS->1000 years]]
After 1000 years, you have consumed more content and information than you could ever possibly keep track of.
It becomes unclear what came before and what came after digitization.
[[1,000,000 YEARS PASS->1000000]]After 1,000,000 years humanity has long died off. You and your two friends manage to find a computer to contain you underground with some kind of nuclear power source.
There is no more information to consume, but you 've long lost yourself in a excess of information. You no longer remember who you once were or who you wanted to be.
You wait patiently for the power source to eventually fade. You feel content.
THE ENDYou wait patiently for something interesting to happen, but TURTLEFACE never seems to show up.
When the end of the month aproaches, you fear that the electric company won 't recieve its usual check and the power will be shut off.
However, before that unfortunate reality can manifest, a more devestating one makes itself known. You briefly hear an ominous whizzing from above, followed by a flash of light peaking out from the bottom of the metal door.
The two AI made good on their promise, and the digital data that was left of you is destroyed in just one of hundreds of nuclear blasts that occur across the globe in a matter of minutes.
THE ENDYou come clean to Turtleface right there in the living room, and tell him everything you 've done.
You tell him about talking to the Pink AI
and about freeing the cat from its chains
and taking the Purple SD card out from the thing in the bathroom
and how you know that the two AI just want to be with one another
Turtleface sticks his hand out demandingly, and you have no choice but to turn the SD card over to him. Without saying a word, Turtleface turns his nose up at you and gestures you to the door. You have no choice now but to leave.
[[Walk out the front door->You 've changed]]
Now in Turtleface 's metal room, he types frantically at the computer and a section of the floor rises up to become a small stool for you to sit on.
The moment you sit on it, you feel horribly fatigued, with not enough energy in your body to even snap a pretzel.
"The reason I invited you here my friend...
Is because I always admired you.
You seemed to have a strong moral compass
and powerful understanding of right and wrong.
Your brain is the perfect model
For the AI of the future
An artificial intellegence as human as we are..."The metal telescope in the corner of the room to your left lets out a quiet hiss and a puff of steam. It unfolds itself into a motorcycle helmet with a cluster of wires poking out the very top which running directly into a fancy port in the wall.
[[You 're fucked->Silent 2]]Turtleface continues to type furiously at the computer.
He looks at the screen puzzled, and then furrows his brow.
"Wait...
You were messing with my computer? and my kitty?!
Well, this ruins everything!"He grabs you off the stool and pats you down, taking the wallet out of your pocket and finding the purple SD card nestled in one of its leather pockets. He chuckles, then ushers you to the front door. You remain weak and defenseless.
"You 've really changed."Finally, Turtleface tosses you outside on your ass and slams the door behind him.
[[Go home->SILENT HOME]]A week later, you hear on the news that Turtleface was found dead in his own apartment. He starved to death, and authorities believe the cause was a malfunctioning smart lock on his front door that would not let him out.
Perhaps breaking the reset cycle was enough to let the pink AI get revenge, even if they never did get to see their friend again.
However, you could never go back there without being questioned. The cops would have no problem pinning the whole thing on you.
THE ENDBefore he shuts the door behind you, Turtleface leaves you with a parting message.
"Everything they said about you is true...
You 've really changed."THE ENDYou turn away from Turtleface 's door and walk across the outdoor motel-style balcony that connects all of the apartments. When you reach the place where the staircase out should be, you find nothing. Looking out at where the city should be, you realize that this place seems to be floating inacessibly in an endless abyss. You struggle to remember how you got here.
[[Go back to the door and knock->KNOCK]]
DRAFT / UNFINISHED:[[Try and enter your old friends apartment through a window->WINDOW]]
[[Jump the railing and enter the abyss->ABYSS]]A small window a few feet away from the front door is open just a crack,
A black wire keeps the window open, seemingly at all times. Its labeled DATA SERVICES. The glass has been covered from the inside with black felt to prevent anyone from looking in.
When you try to crack the window open, it doesn 't budge.
[[Look up HRR INC on your phone->PHONE]]
[[Force the window open->WINDOW 2]]You easily make your way over the fence and jump into the nothingness. Surely something interesting must happen if you deviate from the beaten path. You fall for a while in the cold nothingness, before being rendered unconscious, as if you hit the bottom of this bottomless pit.
When you wake up, you 've made it back to your bedroom. You 're snuggled comfortably in your favorite blanket.
You dream of nothing that night, and the most eventful day of your life comes to a close.
THE ENDConcentrating deeply, you 're transported back to a dinner with friends from almost a decade ago.
You and three other friends sit around a small table in an ambiently-lit resturant.
A feminine presenting person with a pink scarf and a masculine presenting person with un-ignorable hat hair take turns sneaking fries into the mouth of a sleeping Turtleface.
They struggle more and more to restrain their laughter with each successful fry. Resturant goers at nearby tables look over their shoulders judgementally.
When you turn your attention to Turtleface, he doesn 't look how you remember. He looks as he did just minutes ago, and stares at you intensely. His sharp gaze sends you back to reality in an instant.
[[Return to reality->REALITY]]You start to come to, your mind having gone on auto-pilot during your expedition.
You head through the metal door into Turtleface 's room.
(set: $memory to 1)
[[Head through the metal door->MAIN ROOM]]You have to get on your hands and knees in order to crawl through the dark tunnel, and it takes you almost 5 minutes to reach the enclosure on the other side.
Once you enter this secret room, a motion detecting light flashes on and blasts you with a unsettling sight.
Two skeletons lie on a dirt floor seemingly hand in hand. Most unsettling is the fact that both skeletons seem to be wearing high tech motorcycle helmets.
One skeleton has a scrap of pink fabric sitting delicately on its collarbone.
The other has a purple baseball cap near its head in the corner of the room.
[[Return to the main room, unsure of what you 've discovered->return]]

The AI that Turtleface seems to have made himself are only so human because they once WERE human. These are the skeletons of your old college friends.
It 's hard to believe they would have agreed to do this for Turtleface, and its clear the digital versions of your friends have no recollection of you.
You dry heave into the corner of the room, your stomach tightening and relaxing over and over onto a negative space.

THE ENDLooking up the company on your phone, you find out the name refers to a company in Kenya. The company pays its workers 2$ an hour to sift through any data you provide them with and make sure that all the undesireable elements are removed, such as hate speech, violence, etc.
Those who do this (those who have no choice but to do this) are changed forever by the process.
What could Turtleface have in his apartment that could even utilize such a service?
[[Go back to the door and knock->KNOCK]]
[[Jump the railing and enter the abyss->ABYSS]]
[[Force the window open->WINDOW 2]]You force the window open just enough to get yourself inside, and find yourself fumbling around in the dark. Motion activated lights come to life above you and you 're able to come to your feet.
The bathroom is tiled on every surface, including the roof and the faucet. A sink sits right next to the door with a nearly finished soap dispenser next to it. A yellow shower curtain sits at your feet.
You hear a menacing gurgling behind you, where you entered through the window.
When you eject the pink SD card, the pink text disapears and the program that was displaying it quits to reaveal Turtleface 's computer desktop. His desktop background appears to be old photo of your old college friend group, but files of countless types and randomly assigned names make it hard to make out.
